What Causes Kidney Disease

Damage and reduction in the ability of your kidneys to keep you healthy by detoxifying your blood
is the condition known as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). If kidneys do not function well for a long
period of time, it will result in building of wastes and toxins in the blood of a person. Complications
like high blood pressure, anaemia, weak bones and nerve damage are the possible results of kidney
malfunction. The word “chronic” means that the disease is really slow paced, which makes it more
lethal, as the symptoms appear gradually over a period of time and not suddenly. Even the host
doesn’t know that his or her kidneys are already malfunctioning, such is the pace of CKD.
Though early treatment and medication does often help in controlling the disease, but a
fool-proof treatment design for CKD still does not exist. When CKD gets worse, it eventually
leads to kidney failure, which accounts for 8th highest medical cause of death in India. The last stages
of treatment for CKD are initially dialysis and ultimately kidney transplant, if possible.
Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease:
High blood sugar, diabetes and high blood pressure account for two-third cases of chronic
kidney disease. The high content of sugar in blood causes grave damage to human body in
general and the kidney and heart in particular. Blood vessels, eyes and nerves are also affected
by high blood sugar. Rising of the blood pressure or hypertension is caused when the pressure
exerted by blood against the walls of your blood vessels increases. This increases the pressure on the
walls of blood vessels and causes heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure or even multi-organ failure,
which can even result instant death of a person.
Some other conditions that affect kidneys are:
Glomerulonephritis- which is a group of diseases that causes damage directly to the filtering
units of Kidneys, making them fail in their function.
Polycystic Kidney Disease- in which large cysts develop in the kidneys causing damage to the
surrounding soft tissue.
Repeated Urinary Infections- which, if ignored, may lead to a sudden and deadly kidney failure.
The last resort for a CKD is the kidney replacement surgery
wherein, a person whose body is drug and disease free and whose blood group matches
the patient, can donate a kidney to him or her. As we know that it is possible for a human to lead
a normal healthy life with the help of a single kidney, this procedure enables both the donor and
the patient to survive in a healthy state. India has a good number of kidney transplant hospitals
and for a long time, foreigners have preferred organ transplant here.

Care Hospitals is one such reputed hospital which offers world-class services in urology and
related diseases and procedures.
